About Department

Department of Radiation Oncology at GMC Sgr /SMHS Hospital, Karan Nagar, Srinagar has the privilege of being the first ever Radiotherapy Centre in the state of Jammu & Kashmir established in the year 1979 with commissioning of a Tele Cobalt Unit “Janus”.  Department provided Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy treatment services to patients till 1989 when the installed Janus Unit became defunct and Baba Atomic Research Centre Mumbai stopped delivery of radiotherapy treatment because of lack of equipments, requisite manpower, and Radiation Safety Officer. Since then, this department suffered the brunt of turmoil to remain defunct from 1989 till 2005 when the process of revival of Radiotherapy treatment services was initiated.

          Department of Radiation Oncology at GMC Sgr is one of the major clinical departments of the college.  It has its own separate building /block with all cancer treatment facilities being provided under one roof with a direct entry access from the main road and its own indigenous parking.
