The department of Surgery was established in the year 1959 along with the inception of GMC Srinagar with Professor R.C. Khanna as the first head of the department.
It all started with few rooms in the year 1959 at current LD Hospital with few general surgical procedures and over the decades progressed to the current multispecialty tertiary care referral department with the most advanced infrastructure in form of Fully equipped Operation Theatres at its disposal serving the needy population in holistic manner not only from the union territory Jammu and Kashmir but also from all over the country who visit Kashmir as tourists.
It has remained the alma mater of most of the folks holding scalpels in this beautiful part of the world. Devoted to excellence in patient care and to train the next generation of surgeons, this department has blossomed over the years. Since its inception, the department has been progressing in medical education, research and providing quality healthcare. The department has gained immense popularity for doing advanced work in trauma surgery, onco-surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, bariatric surgery, gastro intestinal surgery and paediatric surgery. Most of these are done by minimally access technique. This department achieved a milestone in minimal access surgery in the state with first laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the year 1993.
The department has a qualified faculty with rich surgical expertise and teaching experience imparting training and teaching to MBBS and BDS undergraduate and MS post graduate students.
The department started its Post Graduate program in the year with couple of seats sanctioned annually which was increased from time to time as per the NMC (previously MCI) standards. The current enrollment capacity was increased to 22 Candidates in the year 2020 and currently grooming 51 post graduate scholars.
The department is actively involved in research activities in form of dissertations by Post graduate scholars under supervision of learned Guides, publications of articles/chapters in various International/National Journals/Books, Organizing Conferences/ CMEs/ Surgical Workshops/ Skill Courses
The department in addition also imparts surgical teaching and training to Theatre Assistants and Nurses (AMT College) and conducts various assessments and examinations as per the norms laid down by the University of Kashmir in liaison with Registrar academics GMC Srinagar.
