Post Graduate Department of Ophthalmology Government Medical College, Srinagar marks World Glaucoma week
In recognition of World Glaucoma Day 2025, the Post Graduate Department of Ophthalmology , Government Medical College, Srinagar, hosted a CME in accordance with this year’s theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World.” The CME aimed at raising awareness about glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness in the valley. The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Junaid S.Wani (HOD Ophthalmology), the distinguished faculty members of the Department of Ophthalmology, the Senior Residents and Postgraduate students of the department.

The CME began with a brief overview of the “World Glaucoma week” which was given by Dr.Naqsham Mattoo, Junior Resident, Ophthalmology, who discussed the key focuses and the theme of the 2025 glaucoma week. A presentation was then given by Dr. Snober Yousuf, Assistant Professor and a glaucoma specialist who showcased a presentation titled “Rethinking treatment for advanced glaucoma patients”.She highlighted the importance of early detection and treatment of this disease. Next, an unusual case of Angle Closure Glaucoma was presented by Dr.Adarsh Tiwari Junior Resident. A take home message was delivered by Dr. Asif Amin Vakil, Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, who emphasized the importance of screening and regular eye check-ups in preventing blindness caused by glaucoma. At the end of the program, momentums were handed out to the speakers by the HOD, Dr. Junaid S Wani.
The Department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College emphasized on the regular screening of the eyes, urging regular check-ups and attention to eye health. It also stressed on the importance of early surgical intervention by the health care professionals to prevent glaucoma from going to an advanced stage. With timely interventions many cases of blindness due to glaucoma can be prevented and managed, improving the quality of life for these patients.
