Government Medical College, Srinagar is the Oldest Medical College of J & K
Established in 1959 on the banks of River Jhelum in a small dispensary, now called LD hospital.
G V S Murthy took charge as the first Principal.
Anatomy and physiology were the first departments that started.
Two years later, the college was shifted to its present-day location at Karan Nagar.
On the 25^thof august 1961, GMC Srinagar was formally inaugurated by then Prime Minister of J&K, Mr. Bakhshi Ghulam Mohammad.
Post Graduation: 1963
L.Koul: First postgraduate MSc in 1963.
Dr A.N Safaya: First postgraduatee (MD) in 1964 from the department of Anatomy.
October 2017: MD Anatomy was recognized by MCI.
Twelve PGs/Year since 2020.
In addition, 180 MBBS, 60 BDS, nursing and paramedical students in each academic year.
