About Us

Like most mental health institutions the Govt. Psychiatric diseases hospital, Srinagar started as a mental asylum. The mental asylum was initially part of the Central Jail which was established in the late nineteenth century. Subsequently the hospital, still housed in barracks of the Central Jail, became delinked from it and was established as a mental health facility catered to by the Directorate of Health Services. In the seventies of the last century the Department of Psychiatry got established in the Government Medical College, Srinagar and this mental health facility was converted into Government Psychiatric Diseases Hospital, an associated hospital of the Govt. Medical College, Srinagar. The hospital was selected for up-gradation under NMHP in 2009 to Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (IMHANS). Presently the Govt. Psychiatric Diseases Hospital, Srinagar has two components:

  1. A 100 bedded “Institute of Mental health & Neurosciences (IMHANS)” at Rainawari, Srinagar and

  2. A 30 bedded “Community General Hospital Unit’’ located within SMHS premises.
